"Where focus flows, energy goes."
-Tony Robbins As we discussed in the article What is Spiritual Energy?, spiritual energy is directed by attention. Where the mind and attention goes, our energy flows. If you want to send energy to someone/something, just focus on them/it. It is very simple when explained like this, but not all attention/energy will produce the same effect. Before we can send the maximum amount of energy, we must have the maximum amount of focus. This is where meditation comes in. We must train ourselves to be able to draw the most amount of focus/energy from our thoughts and distractions and apply it to what we actually want to empower with our energy. This is done through deep relaxation and intense practice.
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
-Mahatma Gandhi
Through deep contemplation, we come to the understanding that spiritual energy is carried by pure love, and is maximally invoked by any true spiritual or humanitarian motive. When you take the attention off of "you," and intend to send someone else love, you stop existing as a separate human and become the love you wish to send them. This is why we paradoxically become happier when we focus less on our own happiness. It should be stressed that sending energy is a natural process – not a supernatural one. The energy comes from God/Consciousness – as all things do – but it is nevertheless an aspect of nature, albeit a higher aspect which science as we know it does not yet fully understand.
While focusing on who you would like to send energy to, you can utilize visualizations to further power the energy. Your imagination is the limit. You can picture the person surrounded by a bath of white light, which is the visual representation of pure love. You can further imagine this person in a state of pure bliss and happiness as a result of receiving this love and light.
In addition to visualizations, there are also more powerful tools to boost your available energy. Perhaps the most valuable such tool is the chanting of mantras. A mantra is simply energy in written form. Each mantra represents a certain sound frequency. When we chant a particular sound, our energy begins to vibrate at the frequency of the sound. With the repetition of the sounds, we remain in a higher vibrational state according to the mantra being chanted. The more chants we can recite, the more energy we will receive as a result. For this reason, spiritual technology such as the prayer wheel have been developed to allow the chanting of more mantras. The prayer wheel is truly an invaluable resource to supercharge the power of mantras. It is very potent, yet underutilized spiritual technology. A prayer wheel is a cylindrical container which houses mantras coiled around an axel in the center. When spun clockwise, the energy of the mantra is activated. By spinning many mantras in a prayer wheel, we receive the same benefits as having recited that many mantras. As we can spin alot faster than we can chant, this is an invaluable tool to enhance our practice. The way it works is explained once again through consciousness. By spinning it right to left (clockwise), the mantras are spinning past our vision from left to right, just as we would read them. Even without stopping to read each one, a deeper part of us (subconscious) picks up on and registers them as they pass by, activating them through our consciousness to develop the intended effect. We must remain as conscious as possible while spinning a prayer wheel in order to get the most benefit. Our mind must not stray, but even if it does, the effects are still received. More articles on the benefits of prayer wheels are to come. The typical mantra housed in a prayer wheel is Om Mani Padme Hum, written in sanskrit above. According to Tibetan culture, it is said that all the teachings of Buddha are contained in the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, and that to know the phrase is to know enlightenment. Supposedly, contained in this verse is the truth of the nature of suffering and how to remove its root cause. But there is a bit of a dilemma; the translation from sanskrit to english is very tough. The definition is actually not possible in english, as it emcompasses energetic patterns rather than linguistic understanding. Interestingly, each of the 6 syllables has certain Sanskrit meanings that are important. These oppose the internal forces that cause suffering (karma). Om- Om is the sound or "vibration" of the universe. Universe means "one tone," and refers to the tone of OM. This sound is the most important of all; but in the context of chanting and mantras, it is meant to destroy attachments to ego and establish generosity. Ma-Removes the attachment to jealousy and establishes ethics. Ni- Removes the attachment to desire and establishes patience. Pad- Removes the attachment to prejudice and establishes perserverance. Me- Removes the attachment to possessiveness and establishes concentration Hum-Removes the attachment to hatred and establishes wisdom. Together, these syllables become even more powerful, as the sum of the whole is greater than the sum of its separate parts. This mantra is most important to establishing peace and compassion for others, while also realizing that you are others. Although this mantra is the most popular found in a prayer wheel, any mantra can be used for any desired effect. Below you can find examples of prayer wheels you can purchase. Finally, in order to send energy, we can also make use of what are called mudras. This refers to specific ways of positioning the hands in order to channel energy in a specific pattern, bringing about varied effects. When we place our hands in certain forms, we can bring about different energy qualities. Below is the universal mudra for sending love and light to others. By placing your hands up and opening your chest, you are opening your heart energy center and diffusing love outwards from it. Try for yourself today by heading over the earth energy meditation. With the combined use of the sending mudra, chanting, and/or prayer wheels, you can make a real difference in the amount of love and peace in the world.
